PhotoMetadata Project Reaches Some Disturbing Conclusions
The Stock Artists Alliance (SAA) PhotoMetadata Project has taken a comprehensive survey of metadata practices by photographers and stock image distributors. Unfortunately, some of the survey findings are truly disturbing, especially the study concerning embedded metadata in online previews and thumbnails that are found on the websites of stock image agencies. According to the study, the majority of online stock images incorporate no metadata, or only limited metadata. The PhotoMetadata Project survey NewsBytes Jerry Ghionis also found that when metadata was included, it almost always was the older encoding, not the latest XMP data. By not including metadata, online stock agencies leave photographers vulnerable if and when Congress approves the latest Orphan Works legislation
